New “Bad Boys” Targets $75M Debut

Sony Pictures’ R-rated “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” is targeting a $75 million start globally this weekend – more specifically a launch of around $40 million in North America and $35 million elsewhere.

Deadline reports that domestic projections for this fourth film in the series were originally $50+ million the othe week. Those estimates have dropped to $40+ million of late while the studio ifself is calling it at $30+ million.

What is for certain is that presales are notably behind that of “Bad Boys for Life” which had a $101 million global debut ($62.5 million of which was domestic) ahead of an overall gross of $426 million which could’ve been more had the pandemic not interfered.

The previous film also benefitted from a strong Sunday by opening over MLK weekend – there’s no holiday this time out. All three previous “Bad Boys” movies received straight A CinemaScore so it has a fairly high standard to maintain.

The Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah-directed film will roll out about 92% of its international footprint this weekend so returns will be telling as to its fate. The film is budgeted at $100 million, relatively economical for a Summer blockbuster these days, and so should result in a return for Sony.

New Line is also opening “The Watchers” this weekend with a debut looking to be in the $8-10 million range in North America.
